KOSTAS IOANNIDIS (GR)

With the use of multimodal media, Kostas' Ioannidis work aims to attract the viewer's attention and get them involved in an interactive process.

Part of his work is situated in various unpredictable areas (spots), addressing to passers by, allowing each one to witness an unexpected situation. Some of these are:

BLUE HOUR STORIES

‘Blue Hour Stories' is an underwater sound installation.

Once submerged in the water one hears the continuous singing of nightingales.

The work was presented at the Sportfondsenbad swimming pool, in Rotterdam, Summer of 2001 , and at the Neo Psychico public swimming pool, in Athens, Summer of 2004.

WHITE SEASON

An outdoor sound installation in the months of February and March . In the midst of an outdoor market in Athens, almost at the end of the winter and just before spring , cicadas sing.

Cicadas are known to sing only in summer months in Mediterranean countries. Their singing is associated with the heat of summer, and for locals, it is highly disorientating to hear their singing at this time of year.

Each of the speakers which has been installed in the area transmits the singing of an indidvidual cicada. As a result, the combined sound is uncannily realistic.

The reactions of the passers-by, for the unexplained phenomenon were documented.

The work was presented in Athens, February and March 1998, and at White Box, NYC, June 2004.

THE EARS OF PALEOPOLIS

Paleopolis is the ancient capital of the Cycladic island Andros, where systematic archaeological excavations have not yet been carried out. In August 1992, nine giant cement ears were submerged in the lake of the ancient city, in an area where diving is strictly prohibited due to the possible existence of undiscovered archaeological treasures. Today, two of the ears remain in the original installation. The rest have been stolen by ‘grave diggers' during the past years.

THE BOOK

A plaster ear is hidden inside a book, among other thousands in New York Public Library. Opening the book, besides the ear, one can discover a web address that lings to www.blindear.org . The content of the web site suggests a real journey to Paleopolis, inviting the visitor to discover "THE EARS OF PALAIOPOLIS".

PERSONAL CINEMA (International)

Personal Cinema calls for the emergence of both representation and distribution systems that are responsive to the local, the individual, and even the unprofitable. Personal Cinema is concerned with the presentation of multimedia works such as films, videos, documentaries, video games, CD-ROMs, software, etc., within the framework of independent production and practices that are different from those that are applied by the film industry and the commercial media in general.

Personal Cinema organizes projects and events that engage the critical mind of the public, suggesting alternatives to the new global homogeneity. It focuses attention on problems that concern the local territories and tries to explore the different cultural characteristics that constitute the social identity of the individual. Moreover, it works to develop public contexts for minority groups to express and represent themselves.

Personal Cinema expands in both physical and virtual space using new methods for distribution of personal media works and strategies of public address, because technological innovations have established new rules for engagement with a public that has become accustomed to increasingly frenetic and effortless media. Personal Cinema anticipates cooperation with other social and artistic groups which share the same concerns, and which are likewise dedicated to opening a visible space for debate on social, cultural and political issues.
